In addition to helping to prevent unwanted animal pregnancies, spays and neuters can also be beneficial to the health of individual pets by preventing certain diseases.

At 242 Animal Hospital, our doctors and staff regularly perform spays and neuters under the safest possible conditions, with protocols in place to increase our patients’ comfort and ensure a smooth recovery. If you have concerns about spaying or neutering your pet, you can consult with our team to find out if it’s the healthiest and safest option for them.

What Spay and Neuter Surgeries Can Do for Pet Health

How can your pet benefit personally from being spayed or neutered? Both dogs and cats might be able to expect a healthier and longer life due in part to their procedure.

  • Spaying and neutering can reduce the risk in dogs and cats for certain cancers, including mammary gland tumors, prostate and testicular cancer (males), and ovarian and uterine cancers (females)
  • Spaying prevents females from ever having another heat cycle
  • Males are much less likely to engage in disruptive behaviors such as urine spraying, mounting, vocalizing, and roaming

When to Spay or Neuter Your Pet

The time to spay/neuter your pet depends on their health, breed, and size. Extra-large and giant dog breeds, such as Great Danes and Newfoundlands, should wait until they are about a year old. Cats and small and medium-sized dogs can usually be spayed or neutered around 6 months. You’ll need to speak with your veterinarian to find out for sure when your pet will be ready for their surgery.
